Overwhelming Support for Protection
Sign the Peel Watershed Statement of Support
The Peel watershed was a major public issue in the recent Yukon election. Even though the Yukon Party was returned to government, close to 60% of the electorate voted for opposition parties that declared support for protecting the Peel watershed. This reflects public sentiment demonstrated by a 2009 Datapath survey of Yukoners' attitudes on the environment and the Peel Watershed:
78 %
of people in the Yukon want the majority of the Peel Watershed protected from industrial development.
75 %
say protecting the environment, its wildlife and its wilderness values should be the top priority for the Peel Watershed.
91 %
say roads should not be allowed in any river corridors or important wildlife and wilderness areas in the Peel Watershed.
75 %
of Yukoners want most of the Peel Watershed to remain without roads or industrial development.
85 %
of people in the Yukon say protecting areas like the Peel Watershed helps protect their way of life and the values they hold dear.
61 %
of Yukoners in the private sector who say they value economic opportunity also say protecting the Peel Watershed's wilderness quality, wildlife and overall environment deserves top priority.
Your continued vigilance and conservation action will help persuade the Yukon government to protect 80% of these wild lands, waters and wildlife forever. Help create the largest protected area in North America
by signing the statement of support for the First Nations' goal of protecting the entire Peel River watershed.
